After high school I went straight to university and started my career as a civil engineer — it was a great career and gave me opportunities I'm grateful for. However, 20 years in the industry had taken a toll on my physical and mental health.
One of my mates started jujitsu and recommended I take up a martial art as a fun way to get back into shape. I decided to join the local fight club, where I had access to Muay Thai, jujitsu and MMA. It was a shock to the system going from an office-based job to intense exercise — but I stuck with it and started to embrace it.
I was there for 8 years, and during that time I sat down with one of my coaches and asked how he got into teaching martial arts and fitness. I'd mentioned that I needed to change my lifestyle and occupation to be more active and healthier for myself and my family. He advised me to start with a personal training qualification, and combined with my martial arts knowledge I'd have a good foundation.
So that's where it began, and for over 6 years I've been training clients and enjoying my job. I understand and appreciate the challenges of most people's working and family lives, how difficult it can be to make time to look after your health, and how quickly an unhealthy lifestyle can creep up on you. This is where I've found most of my success: making training safe and convenient for a busy working-family lifestyle.
